Stu News Newport: Spring Break Nature Camp comes to ENC in April

March 12, 2024 – The ENC has offered Nature Camps since 1977. Nature Camp provides nature play and quality science education in an outdoor, hands-on setting. ENC Nature Camp emphasizes experiential learning. Campers spend their time outside, having a great time observing nature up close using tools like binoculars, magnifying lenses and microscopes. Science concepts are introduced in a fun environment, with crafts, games and hands-on activities. Read the whole article HERE.

Stu News Newport: ENC seeks high school students for Leader in Training program

January 24, 2024 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is looking for responsible high school students that love nature and working with children to be a part of the Leader in Training (LIT) program for their upcoming Presidents Week and Spring Break Camps. What is a Leader in Training? LITs are amazing high school students who help youngsters during nature camps. LIT orientation lasts 1.5 hours and may be shorter depending on number of attendees. Orientation will cover a tour of the ENC grounds, a PowerPoint detailing what to expect at nature camp, an overview of camp policies, a rundown of fun icebreaker games to play with your camp group, camp tips and tricks, and an opportunity for you all to ask questions. Stu News Newport: ENC to hold Native Plant activities in January

January 9, 2024 – Join the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) during January for a Native Plant Uses Walk, Winter Native Plant sale and volunteer to help the habitat. Volunteer on Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 3-5 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 3-5 p.m., to assist ENC on the grounds with removal of non-native invasive plant species. December 12 2023 – Imagine a magical morning where the towering redwoods become the backdrop for a captivating oral legend called “Deer Mother,” as told by Education Coordinator Skyler Forche. November 10, 2023 – Come visit the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) next week, as autumn is such a special time there. Many of their trees have dropped their leaves as the weather turns cooler and the days become shorter. It’s fun to walk the trails covered with spongy layers of wet, fallen leaves and gaze up through the bare branches to the clear blue sky. Stu News Newport: 48th Annual ENC Fall Faire & Pumpkin Patch raises $55,000

October 20, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) hosted their 48th Annual Fall Faire & Pumpkin Patch on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Attracting hundreds of community members, the afternoon featured crafts, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, entertainment on the Fire Circle Stage, a pumpkin patch, and food from local OC restaurants in their Savor OC Showcase. The Zero Waste Event raised $55,000 to benefit ENC and its education programs. To date, nearly $3,000 was raised from the online auction. The Knight Crier: Bo Glover receives NPAAA Lifetime Achievement Award

October 7, 2023 – TOWAMENCIN – The North Penn Alumni Athletic Association annually rewards the NPAAA Lifetime Achievement Award to an alumnus who has made significant contributions to society in their field outside of sports, whether it be business, philanthropy, education, justice, or another sector. This year’s NPAAA Lifetime Achievement Award has been awarded to North Penn Class of ’85 alumni Mr. Bo Glover for his body of work regarding educating and connecting the youth with nature in Newport Beach, California, serving not only students but the environment. July 28, 2023 – Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is presenting its fifth Wine Walk on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 4-7 p.m. The ENC is collaborating with Hi-Time Wine Cellars to provide guests with an afternoon of wine tasting, while helping to raise funds for environmental education. Yahoo Finance – LPA-Designed Environmental Nature Center Preschool Earns Living Building Challenge Petal Certification

May 24, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center Preschool in Newport Beach designed by LPA Design Studios has been awarded Petal Certification by the Living Building Challenge, the penultimate level of recognition by the world’s most rigorous performance standard for sustainable buildings. The nature-based preschool is the first project in Orange County, and only the third in Southern California, to receive Petal certification, a performance-based standard recognizing “living buildings” that restore and support the local environment. May 19, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center’s (ENC) state-of-the-art ENC Nature Preschool, which opened in fall 2019, has been awarded Petal Certification by the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge (LBC) program, the world’s most ambitious, advanced and holistic performance program for green, resilient and healthy buildings. Only 54 projects in the world have achieved a Petal Certification. The ENC Nature Preschool is the first project in Orange County and the third in Southern California to achieve this certification. Stu News Newport – Celebrate the outdoors with these ENC events, opportunities 

May 5, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is offering experiences this spring, from camping out under the stars and a summer soiree to a teachers’ night out and a native plant uses walk. There are some volunteer opportunities, too, so get out there and enjoy nature as the weather warms up. On Monday, May 15 from 3-4:30 p.m., ENC is holding training for Volunteer Museum Docents. The ENC is seeking new Museum Docent Volunteers to staff the front desk, answer phones, greet visitors and provide basic information about the ENC. Training includes an overview of frequently asked questions, a description of the building’s sustainability features, and a brief narrative of the ENC’s history and current programs. Docents will view a one-hour presentation, tour the building and grounds, and learn the phone system. Read the whole article HERE.

Stu News Newport – Look what’s happening at ENC in April and a family campout in May

April 14, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is offering fun and educational events in April to celebrate Earth Month and a family campout in May to experience the sights and sounds of the Center at nighttime. On Saturday, April 15, join this special Reading in the Redwoods event. ENC Early Childhood Education Specialist Chandler Barger will read My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan. Bring a blanket or towel. Afterward, children and their adults will participate in hands-on activities related to the theme of the book. February 7, 2023 – Join the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) and California Native Plant Society OC Chapter for “A Sage in Every Garden.” They are giving away one free four-inch White Sage (Salvia apiana) to Orange County residents (one per household while supplies last) on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at ENC. White sage is being illegally harvested from wild lands to satisfy demand for dried smudge sticks. Do not buy wild-sourced sage bundles, but rather grow your own. White sage will thrive in Orange County gardens. It likes full sun and needs little water once established. White sage grows two to feet tall with silvery leaves and lavender/white flower stalks. February 3, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is holding an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, Feb. 13 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. If you would like to participate, you can make an appointment here. The Red Cross must collect approximately 13,000 blood donations every day to keep up with demand, and the need for lifesaving blood is fulfilled through the help of Red Cross volunteers and donors. January 31, 2023 – On Saturday, Feb. 11, ENC Lead Naturalist Skyler Forche will read his favorite children’s book, Frog Girl by Paul Owen Lewis. After, children and their adults will participate in hands-on activities that explore this Native American legend. January 24, 2023 – On Saturday, Jan. 28, ENC is holding a Native Plant Sale taking place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Native plants help save our ecosystems and the bird and insect species that depend on them. Gardens are fast becoming the last refuge for many wildlife species, such as songbirds, butterflies, bees, frogs and other beneficial creatures, that have lost habitat due to human development. Cultivated gardens that offer a rich diversity of native plants offer more resources for wildlife, such as foraging opportunities for birds and other wildlife. Newport Beach Independent – Environmental Nature Center Re-Opens Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary in Modjeska Canyon

January 5, 2023 – The Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach expanded its footprint when it acquired the 12-acre Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary in Modjeska Canyon in 2021. Stu News Newport – ENC is Seeking Museum Docents

December 27, 2022 – Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is seeking new museum docents to staff the front desk, answer phones, greet visitors and provide basic information about the ENC. Currently, they need help on Tuesday mornings and afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Friday mornings and afternoons. Docents staff the front desk from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., or from 12:30-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 12:30-5 p.m. on weekdays. Stu News Newport – ENC holds Artisan Marketplace, raises nearly $7,000

December 6, 2022 – The 8th Annual Environmental Nature Center (ENC) Artisan Marketplace was held on Sunday, Dec. 4. Hundreds of community members shopped for handmade and vintage gifts from more than 50 local artisans offering a variety of eco-friendly, sustainable products. Shoppers were serenaded by holiday tunes from local jazz/pop/rock artists Sidenotes Keys/Bass. Guests enjoyed spending the day in nature instead of a shopping mall. Vendors paid booth fees and donated a percentage of their sales to the ENC. Visitors paid a $2 entry fee. Combined with sponsorships from Farmers & Merchants Bank and Janet Krochman, CPA, the event raised nearly $7,000 to help the ENC provide transformative experiences through connection to nature. Los Angeles Times – Orange County Visionaries: Bo Glover

October, 2022 – Bo Glover started at the Environmental Nature Center as a volunteer back in 1991. One thing led to another, and he found himself in the position of executive director of the ENC, holding that position since 1995. In 2007, after successful fundraising, the ENC broke ground on an 8,500-square-foot Nature Center, which became the first building in Orange County to receive LEED Platinum certification… Read the whole article HERE.

October 21, 2022 – The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) hosted its biggest event of the year – the Fall Faire and Pumpkin Patch, on Sunday, Oct. 16. The event raised more than $50,000, with all proceeds benefiting the Environmental Nature Center, ENC Nature Preschool and ENC Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary. September 23, 2022 – The Environmental Nature Center’s (ENC) Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. starting October 1. The property includes a natural history museum, trails and bird observation deck. The Sanctuary is located at 29322 Modjeska Canyon Road in Modjeska Canyon. September 8, 2022 – The Environmental Nature Center, known as the ENC, is home to 15 California native plant communities from desert to redwood forest as well as walking trails, wildlife habitats and a sustainably designed learning center. Edison International: Celebrating 50 Years of Love for Mother Earth

April 8, 2022 – In 1972, biology teachers at Newport Harbor High School and local volunteer groups created a living nature laboratory out of soil dumped during the construction of the school’s Olympic-sized swimming pool. April 5, 2022 – Tucked in at the bend of a path or an opening in the trees, artists painted the natural scenes before them. The Environmental Nature Center opened its grounds on Tuesday, April 5, to painters. Stu News Newport: ENC to hold Composting 101 program

February 11, 2022 – Join the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. for a composting discussion and demonstration. Master Gardener Kelly Christensen will lead the program and provide handouts. A new state law, Senate Bill 1383 requires all California residents and businesses to recycle organic waste, including food waste and green waste, in addition to standard recycling materials. The rules aim to reduce organic waste sent to landfills by 75% by 2025, as a strategy to address climate change and reduce the impacts on landfills. December 15, 2021 – Wolves and coyotes won’t be roaming wild around the Environmental Nature Center on the evening of January 27. However, you can learn a lot about the worlds of wolves and coyotes. Skie Bender, an Education Outreach Specialist from Wolf Haven International, will present a talk that looks at these two canids’ behavioral habits, their species history, ecosystem roles, and their similarities and differences with canines (wild and domesticated). December 14, 2021LEED-certified buildings are on the rise and making our cities greener, according to the 2019 US Green Building Adoption Index by CBRE. “The 2019 Green Building Adoption Index shows that 4,879 or 13.8% of all commercial office buildings across the 30 largest U.S. office markets are green certified—the highest total in the index’s history. Measured in square footage, 42.2% of total space across the top 30 office markets is green certified, up from 41.9% last year,” CBRE said. November 2, 2018 – Construction has begun on the highly anticipated ENC Nature Preschool. Lori Whalen, assistant director, said visitors will find blooms starting to pop on California poppies, Hooker’s evening primroses, Island snapdragons, sugar bushes, brittlebushes and California encelias.
