Tiger Cub badge Tiger Cub Discover Nature Program (1st grade)
On a hike through the Center, scouts watch the weather and enjoy a scavenger hunt for nature items that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Scouts participate in a seed skit, and build a human tree to learn the role of seeds, roots, green leaves, bark and flowers in the life of plants. At the culmination of the hike, scouts make beautiful leaf rubbings to take home with them. The program satisfies 5f, 5d and 5g. It is 1 hour and costs $5 per scout.
Wolf Cub badge Wolf Cub Outdoor Adventure (2nd grade)
On a hike through the Center, and in the Nature Museum, scouts observe ten different kinds of native birds. Along the trail scouts safely encounter poison oak, and discuss the dangers of poisonous plants and their importance in the ecosystem. On a tour of our green building, scouts learn about which items can be recycled, and how they can save energy. This program satisfies 7b, 7e, 10b, 13d, and 18g. It is 1 hour and costs $5 per scout.
Bear Cub badge Bear Cub Wildlife Wander (3rd grade)
On a hike through the Center, scouts learn about hummingbirds, their adaptations and how they live. The boys explore the Nature Center and discuss specific types of endangered and extinct animals. The ENC Naturalist shares what it's like to work in the conservation field. The program satisfies Achievement 5a, 5c, 5d, and 5e. It is 1 hour and costs $5 per scout.
Artist Pin Webelos Artist Pin Program (4th - 6th grade)
Scouts learn about primary and secondary colors, composition layout, balance, horizon line, foreground, background, and light source. They are taught proper brush techniques and complete a painting. Scouts draw a silhouette of another scout, and create a simple 3D sculpture out of clay and found objects. All materials, (except for found objects), are provided. This program is 3 hours and costs $15 per scout. Minimum $75.
Forester Pin Webelos Forester Pin Program (4th - 6th grade)
Along the trail, scouts create a poster showing how a tree's growth rings tell its life history. Scouts observe the layers of the forest, from the herb layer to the canopy, then create a diagram to take home. Scouts learn to identify at least six species of trees, and six plants, and discover how those plants are used by both people and animals. Along the trail scouts will pause to discuss the drawbacks - and benefits - of wildfires. The program is 1.5 hours and costs $6 per scout.
Geologist Pin Webelos Geologist Pin Program (4th - 6th grade)
Scouts become junior geologists as they learn to differentiate between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Along the trail scouts observe rocks and minerals found locally in Orange County, and discuss the uses of these non-renewable resources in a hands-on activity. They learn about and diagram ways that mountains and volcanoes are formed. Near "Fossil Ridge," scouts discuss the formation of fossils while exploring those present in boulders dating back 70 million years. Scouts learn how fossils are used to date formations. The program is 1.5 hours and costs $6 per scout.
Naturalist Pin Webelos Naturalist Pin Program (4th - 6th grade)
Scouts explore the Center in search of birds. They discuss the things birds need to survive, including space to rest along the Pacific Flyway during migration. Along the trail the scouts safely encounter poison oak, and discuss the dangers and importance of poisonous plants and animals. During the hike scouts perform in a skit to learn the roles of producers, consumers and decomposers. Scouts cite ways that humans have changed the balance of Nature, and make a commitment to take at least one action to help protect the environment. The program is 1.5 hours and costs $6 per scout.
Scientist Pin Webelos Scientist Pin Program (4th - 6th grade)
Scouts perform exciting experiments to learn about Bernoulli’s Principle, Pascal’s Law, and Newton’s First Law of Motion. They learn about inertia, hydraulics and how airplanes can fly. Scouts make popper rockets to discover how atmospheric pressure and air pressure work. They learn how the eye works and perform optical illusions and eye tricks. The program is 1.5 hours and costs $6 per scout.
